Media Literacy: Becoming Anti-Racist News Consumers

Journalists aim to create and serve a more informed public. But news outlets can perpetuate racist narratives by centering whiteness and not addressing structural inequity in their stories. KUOW RadioActive will shed light on the history of white-centering media and provide tools for how to be critical thinking, responsible news consumers. We’ll look at the ways white supremacy and racist narratives show up in the news, why it matters, and offer three questions you can ask to think critically about any news story.

Panelist:

Troy Landrum Jr. leads RadioActive’s community programming and outreach strategy, as well as co-leading intro workshop and mentor teams.

  • A native of Indianapolis, Troy developed a passion for writing during a process of self-rediscovery surrounding identity, faith, and his family’s migration stories from Jim Crow South to the Midwest. Prior to completing his Masters in Fine Arts and Poetics at the University of Washington Bothell, Troy worked for various programs and nonprofit organizations with focuses on youth development, community development and breaking the cycles of the School to Prison Pipeline.
